Parallel Acquisition of Radial Velocities and Metallicities for the Gaia Mission
نویسندگان
چکیده
We discuss possible options for the acquisition of radial velocities in parallel with the astrometric data for the global astrometry mission GAIA, currently under study in the framework of the scienti c programme of the European Space Agency. The scienti c rationale of a parallel radial velocity programme, in the light of the recent evolution of the GAIA concept toward signi cantly fainter magnitudes, is discussed, and a possible instrument concept is presented. The approach currently being investigated could yield radial velocities accurate to ' 10 km s 1 for targets as faint as V ' 17 mag, and as accurate as ' 1 kms 1 for relatively bright stars (V ' 10{12 mag). These performance gures, derived for a realistic instrumental con guration, compatible with the GAIA con guration currently being studied, would greatly enhance the scienti c return from GAIA itself, and produce signi cant science of its own.

The Gaia mission Pulsating stars with Gaia
Gaia is a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) selected in 2000, with a target launch date of 2011. The Gaia mission will perform a survey of about 1 billion sources brighter than V = 20. Its goal is to provide astrometry leading to parallaxes, proper-motions and positions. Astrometric data are complemented by multicolour photometry and a spectroscopic instrument (up to V = 17...
متن کاملOn the accuracy of GAIA radial velocities
We have obtained 782 real spectra and used them as inputs for 6700 automatic crosscorrelation runs to investigate GAIA potential in terms of radial velocity accuracy. We have explored the dispersions 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 Å/pix over the 8490–8740 Å GAIA range. We have investigated late-F to early-M stars (constituting the vast majority of GAIA targets), slowly rotating (< Vrot sin i > = 4 km sec )...
متن کاملThe Gaia Project - technique, performance and status
Gaia is a satellite mission of the ESA, aiming at absolute astrometric measurements of about one billion stars (all stars down to 20 magnitude, with unprecedented accuracy. Additionally, magnitudes and colors will be obtained for all these stars, while radial-velocities and spectral properties will be determined only for bright objects (V < 17.5). At 15 magnitude Gaia aims at an angular accurac...
متن کاملGAIA Spectroscopy and Radial Velocities
GAIA spectroscopic and radial velocity performancies are reviewed on the base of groundbased test observations and simulations. The prospects for accurate analysis of stellar atmospheres (temperature, gravity, chemical abundances, rotation, peculiarities) and precise radial velocities (single stars, binaries, pulsating stars) are colorful provided the spectral dispersion is high enough. A highe...
متن کاملThe rotation-metallicity relation for the Galactic disk as measured in the Gaia DR1 TGAS and APOGEE data
Aims. Previous studies have found that the Galactic rotation velocity-metallicity (V-[Fe/H]) relations for the thin and thick disk populations show negative and positive slopes, respectively. The first Gaia data release includes the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) information, which we use to analyze the V-[Fe/H] relation for a strictly selected sample with high enough astrometric accura...
